PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Mr. McNalis joined the firm in 1986 after a career in public service with the Chicago Fire Department and Cook County State Attorney's Office. Mr. McNalis has 30 years of litigation experience and practices in the area of insurance litigation including arson and fraud, bad faith, environmental litigation, construction litigation and commercial litigation. Mr. McNalis received his B.S. in Criminal Justice, cum laude, from the University of Illinois in 1974. He attended John Marshall Law School, Chicago, Illinois and received his Juris Doctorate in 1979.
Mr. McNalis started his career with the Chicago Fire Department from July 1977 to June 1983 as a firefighter assigned to one of the most active and seasoned rescue units in the City of Chicago. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and, after obtaining his law degree, became the first firefighter to be the legal advisor to the Chicago Fire Commissioner. As an assistant state attorney to Cook County State Attorney's Office, Chicago, Illinois from June 1983 to June 1986, Mr. McNalis was assigned to the Special Prosecution's Arson Task Force.
In addition to the experience Mr. McNalis gained fighting arson fires as a Chicago firefighter, he also received special training in combating and investigating arson fires conducted by the Illinois Department of Law Enforcement, the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms in Glencoe, Georgia.
PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS
Mr. McNalis is licensed to practice law in Florida (1986) and Illinois (1979). He is a member of the Trial Bar of the United States District Court for the Northern, Middle and Southern Districts of Florida and the Federal Bar, United States District Court, Northeastern District of Illinois.
He is a member of the Tort and Insurance Practice Section and Law Practice Management Section of the American Bar Association. As a member of The Florida Bar, Mr. McNalis served as Chairman of Florida Bar Grievance Committee 15F. Mr. McNalis has also been a member of the International Association of Arson Investigations, The Florida Advisory Committee on Arson Prevention, Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission and Volunteer Lawyers' Project.
SPEECHES, LECTURES AND PAPERS
Mr. McNalis has participated in and been a frequent lecturer at conferences, educational programs and public forums. Topics include investigation and prosecution of arson cases, investigation of fraudulent claims, coverage issues and claims handling.
Mr. McNalis was an instructor for Southern Illinois University at Carbondale for a college course in fire law. This course covered all aspects of the law as it relates to fire losses including liability issues, arson and the laws regulating criminal investigations.
COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES
Mr. McNalis is a scout leader with the Boy Scouts of America.
