PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Ms. Stein-McCarthy joined the firm of Powers, McNalis, Torres & Teebagy in September 2005. As a civil litigation attorney, Ms. Stein-McCarthy primarily handles first party insurance matters. Ms. Stein-McCarthy has defended a broad range of claims including homeowners, homeowners association, corporation and condominium association claims for property damage and loss of business profit due to hurricane damage, sinkhole, mold collapse and other various water losses.
During law school at Seton University in Newark, New Jersey, Ms. Stein-McCarthy was an intern for the Federal District Court in Trenton, New Jersey. After graduating in 1996, Ms. Stein-Mccarthy began her legal career in New Jersey specializing in large loss subrogation matters and was involved with one of the largest commercial fire losses in New Jersey, representing a multitude of litigants for both insured and uninsured losses.
Prior to relocating to Florida, Ms. Stein-McCarthy also handled multi-million dollar coverage disputes between Fortune 500 companies and their comprehensive general liability carriers. In this capacity, Ms. Stein-McCarthy defended significant coverage disputes wherein large chemical manufacturers/developers and other corporations south indemnification for government imposed environmental cleanup costs under CERCLA and other state environmental regulations. Ms. Stein-McCarthy became familiar with complex commercial litigation involving joint defense work and complex discovery management of millions of documents.
While working full time as an associate, Ms. Stein-McCarthy passed the Florida Bar exam and moved to Florida in November of 1999. Her practice in Florida initially focused on the defense of various types of personal injury/third party claims.
Ms. Stein-McCarthy joined Powers, McNalis, Torres & Teebagy with significant defense related experience in both the first party and liability context. Ms. Stein-McCarthy also has experience as an appellate advocate on behalf of the insurance industry and has also defended excess carriers as well as syndicates of the London market.

Ms. Stein-McCarthy is also proficient in the French language having studied and obtained a certificate of proficiency at the University of Pau in Pau, France.
PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS
Ms. Stein-McCarthy is licensed to practice in all state courts of Florida, as well as the Federal Bar for the United States District Court for the Northern, Middle and Southern Districts of Florida. She is also licensed to practice in the State and Federal Courts of New Jersey. She has been a member of the New Jersey Bar since December 1996, and the Florida Bar since October 1999.
Ms. Stein-McCarthy has participated in, delivered presentations, and presented case law analysis for clients in the insurance industry and legal profession. She was also a contributing author to the insurance claims newsletter, Briefly Speaking.
Ms. Stein-McCarthy is an active member of the Florida's Legal Aid Society providing pro bono legal services to indigent clients, and is a long time supporter of the Florida Humane Society. She previously served as a freelance reporter for the Sun Sentinel News Group. |
